Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is now live, and sole traders across the North West of England are navigating the new quarterly submission requirements for the first time. Whether you're a freelancer in Manchester, a tradesperson in Lancashire, a consultant in Cheshire, or running a small business anywhere across the region — this guide covers what MTD means for you and how to stay compliant without the stress.
Who we are
TaxChill is a bookkeeping and MTD compliance service based in the North West of England. We work with sole traders right across the region — and because everything we do is cloud-based, we can support clients anywhere in the UK just as effectively as those around the corner.
Our founder Ben has spent years working in local accounting, helping small businesses in the North West get their finances in order. TaxChill was built specifically for sole traders who want professional support without the accountancy firm price tag.
What is MTD ITSA and does it affect North West sole traders?
MTD ITSA — Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment — applies to any sole trader or landlord earning over £50,000 per year, regardless of where in the UK they're based. If you're self-employed in Greater Manchester, Liverpool, Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumbria, or anywhere else in the North West, the same rules apply.

The quarterly submission deadlines
Under MTD ITSA, you now submit four quarterly updates to HMRC each year instead of a single annual tax return. The key dates are:
- 5 August 2026 — Q1 submission (April to July)
- 5 November 2026 — Q2 submission (July to October)
- 5 February 2027 — Q3 submission (October to January)
- 5 May 2027 — Q4 submission (January to April)
- 31 January 2027 — Final declaration (replaces your old Self Assessment return)
Miss these and HMRC's penalty points system kicks in. See our full guide to MTD ITSA deadlines and penalties for everything you need to know.
How TaxChill works for North West sole traders
We work with sole traders across all sectors in the North West — tradespeople, consultants, freelancers, delivery drivers, creatives, tutors, and many more. Here's what we do:
- Connect your bank feeds — we link directly to your business bank account and pull in your transactions automatically
- Categorise your income and expenses — we sort everything quarterly so your books are always up to date
- Prepare your quarterly MTD submission — we build your update, send it to you for approval, and submit to HMRC before the deadline
- Provide quarterly tax estimates — so you always know what your likely tax bill will be before January arrives
- Handle your final declaration — the annual sign-off with HMRC
And because we're cloud-based, you never need to come to an office or post us anything. Everything happens remotely, efficiently, and on your schedule.
What expenses can North West sole traders claim?
The good news: expenses are the same wherever in the UK you're based. You can claim for home office costs, business mileage, equipment, professional fees, marketing, training, and more.
For a full breakdown, see our complete sole trader expenses list or our guide to what expenses sole traders can claim.
One thing worth noting for North West-based sole traders who travel for work: if you regularly travel between clients across Greater Manchester, Lancashire, or Cheshire — those journeys are claimable as business mileage at 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles.
Do I need an accountant or a bookkeeper?
This is one of the most common questions we get. The honest answer is that most sole traders with straightforward finances don't need a full accountancy firm — what they need is someone to keep their books in order, categorise their transactions correctly, and handle their MTD submissions on time.
That's exactly what TaxChill does, at a fraction of the cost of a traditional accountant. Read our full guide on whether you need an accountant for MTD ITSA to make an informed decision.
