Why we built TaxChill

I've spent years working in local accounting, building experience from the ground up alongside small businesses in my community. The kind of businesses where the owner is also the bookkeeper, the sales team, and the person making the tea — all at the same time.

Over time, I started to notice a pattern. Friends, family members, people I'd grown up with — many of them running their own small businesses — were all dealing with the same thing. Come January, there'd be panic. A tax bill they hadn't planned for. A scramble to find paperwork. A nagging feeling that they were somehow doing it wrong, even when they weren't.

That gap is what TaxChill was built to fill. Not for big businesses with finance departments. Not for people with complex multi-income situations. For sole traders — the plumber, the freelance designer, the consultant — who just want to know they're compliant and have a clear picture of what their tax bill is going to look like before it arrives.

When HMRC introduced Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, I saw both a challenge and an opportunity. For a lot of sole traders, the new quarterly reporting requirements felt overwhelming. But done right, MTD actually makes your finances less stressful — because instead of one big reckoning in January, you always know where you stand.
